iLike Barry Hansen

Short Version:

Barry Hansen has always loved communicating through music and art. As a child he played the clarinet, piano and trumpet while constantly doodling on PeeChees and in the margins of his schoolwork. He found a way to do both at Brigham Young University. While majoring in graphic design, he studied voice and sang with BYU’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Barry has sung professionally since 2001. His studio vocals are featured on over a dozen albums and he has released one solo album, My Soul Hungered. Barry is also a songwriter and has co-written several songs with his brother and producer, Greg Hansen. Their original song "I'm a Celebrity" is featured on A Father's Love, new from Covenant. "One Step Closer" is a new trek song included on an LDSAudio.com virtual Trek album. Both songs are also available as singles and will be included on Barry's upcoming second solo album. Barry was a 2004 Pearl Award nominee for Studio Vocalist, and a 2006 nominee for Male Vocalist of the Year. He performed in two televised Pearl Awards broadcasts. A freelance graphic designer (see hansencreative.com), he is also a four-time Pearl Award nominee for Album Design, winning the award in 2004. Barry’s music both inspires and entertains. He loves to teach and often combines his songs with personal stories when presenting to youth and adult groups. Barry and his wife Marian recently moved from Utah to Idaho Falls, Idaho, and are the parents of four boys and four girls.

Long Version:

Barry Hansen grew up in Northwest Washington, taking piano lessons and playing the clarinet and trumpet before deciding what he really loved was singing. His first public performance was in church as a teenager. Barry's musical influences range from Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand to Donny Osmond, Josh Groban and Michael Bublé. His vocal style has been called "the perfect blend of pop and theater" (Dave Tinney).

Barry studied voice at Brigham Young University and sang with BYU's Vocal Jazz Ensemble. He served a French-speaking mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Québec, and graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, cum laude, in graphic design.

He has worked as an ad agency art director and freelance graphic designer in Dallas, Texas; Portland, Oregon; Bellingham, Washington; and currently in Orem, Utah.

In 2001 Barry recorded a demo and began recording studio vocals on several albums, including Parables by Jenny Phillips and several for the Inspirational Music Showcase record label, among them Seminary's Greatest Songs, True to the Faith, Bring Them In, Let Us Go Forth, Night of All Nights, and The Whole Armor of God. Barry and his brother Greg wrote the title track to Let Us Go Forth. Barry performed a favorite seminary song, My Soul Hungered, as part of the Faith Centered Music Association's 2003 Pearl Awards television broadcast (watch it here).

In 2004 Barry teamed up with his brother and producer Greg to create his first album, My Soul Hungered (buy it here). It includes The Title of Liberty, co-written by Barry and Greg. (The Title of Liberty was commissioned by a non-profit organization by the same name; read more about it here.)

He was a 2004 FCMA Pearl Award nominee for Studio Vocalist, and a three-time nominee for Album Design, winning the Pearl Award for Album Design in 2004. In 2006 he was a finalist for Male Vocalist of the Year.

Barry's music can be heard on KOSY 106.5's Sounds of the Sabbath and FM100's Soft Sunday Sounds, now broadcast online all week long. BYU Radio always plays Barry's music throughout the week.

Barry enjoys every opportunity to share his music and his testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ (see his firesides page for more information). He frequently performs locally and around the country, singing both inspirational and contemporary ballads. He has traveled throughout the United States both as a singer and a public speaker. Barry and his wife Marian reside in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and are the parents of eight children.
